Who watched the BBC’s “The Truth about Looking Good?” Quite remarkable outcomes and some already known facts about sun damage & its contribution towards accelerated ageing. Sun exposure, according to Professor Chris Griffiths at Salford Royal Hospital, is the key cause of wrinkles. UVA being the main one ….. even penetrating glass! Sun exposure is responsible for most clinical features we can see in sun ageing. In order of 75%!
So we all sort of knew this anyway – right? Maybe not such a high percentage I must admit.
Let’s look how we can prevent ageing and help already damaged skin. The take home message of this programme was to protect your skin from UVA (see Blog on L- Carnosine) and use Vitamin A Retinol as part of your anti ageing regime and to treat already damaged skin.

Retinol
Retinol is in the Vitamin A family – Retinol, retinal, and
four carotenoids including beta carotene .
Vitamin A is needed for eye sight, maintenance of the skin & human development. It is converted in the body to retinal & retinoid acid through which it acts. Dietary sources include fish, dairy products & meat – Liver, orange, ripe yellow fruits, leafy vegetables, carrots, pumpkin, squash, spinach, fish, soy milk, milk.
Retinol was discovered in 1909, isolated in 1931, and first made in 1947.
Dermatologists consider retinol the holy grail of non invasive wrinkle-prevention. When applied topically, this vitamin A derivative stimulates collagen production and cell turnover, which reduces the appearance of fine lines, evens out complexion, and unclogs pores. It’s effective in reversing sun damage, fighting acne, reducing wrinkles, and shrinking pores. It’s just as effective for men as it is for women, even though, like most skincare products, it’s mostly marketed to women.
Natural Alternatives to Retinol
Carotenoids are an excellent organic alternative that our bodies naturally convert to usable retinoids. They occur naturally in a number of soothing, gentle ingredients that won’t cause more problems for your skin later on.
Retinoids are either synthetically prepared or are found in animal sources such as meat, poultry, fish and dairy. This can make them more irritating. Carotenoids, like beta-carotene, are a safer alternative sourced from plants. Carotenoids are naturally converted to retinoids in our own skin, making them much more gentle than synthetic retinoids or retinoids that have been metabolized to retinol by its animal source.
In simple terms, there are three options for vitamin A in skincare. You can get retinoids harvested from animals that have already metabolized the vitamin, you can use synthetic copies of converted retinoids, or you can opt for gentle carotenoids that your body can easily convert itself into usable retinoids. Offering similar results, without the nasty side effects, and are a much better way to vitamin A!
